I'm moving forward on a new painting about Veronica. It's got a ways to go still, but figured I'd share it and the original sketch that inspired it. It's getting that teal paint that's holding up the sketchbook next. Then comes the ink and oil pastel. I should have it finished this week if everything goes to plan. If not, you'll see it weeks from now without anything from this picture still visible on it hehe.

My big news of the week?

I got Microsoft Office.

Now I know this isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but honestly, I don't have the most exciting weeks all the time. I'm glad I finally got it, as I use it quite a bit, and it's much easier than Google's version of Excel. I played around in it for about 4 hours yesterday getting things done and afterwards, still had it running in my head. This is what I saw when I closed my eyes.

Again, not the most exciting thing, but you take what you can get some weeks.

I also finished Mark Twain's Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc. He can still write. I was a bit worried that he may have lost it over the last few years, having been out of the business for a while, but he's still got it. Now I've got my crush on Joan again. Sometimes dealing with people like Mark and Joan are more fun than normal people. Being dead means you know what you're getting. It's not like Joan's mad at you for anything, or Mark will decide to quit writing and start a country band anytime soon. Mark will always be the writer you want, and Joan will always be the girl who liberated France and was burned at the stake 3 times. I wonder if that would leave teeth behind. Be right back, I'm going to find the melting point of teeth...

Okay I'm back. I found a hypothesis of 1760C which is 3200F. They apparently survive cremation which is around 1200F. That must have been why she was burned 3 times. To get the teeth. I looked around and couldn't find anything on the average temperature of stake burning, so I'll have to take their words on the fact that after 3, there was nothing left but ash.

So I'm still sick. This means I'm spending more time sleeping than not, and watching 80s TV shows on Hulu. These are the thing I do when I'm sick. Now you know one of my darkest secrets.

So on to 80s TV shows. Perhaps you were curious as to what would happen if one were to watch too many of them while being foggy brained. My theory is that you'd get a lot of weird sketches based on random things seen in the show for a few seconds and then never seen again.

Running with the bulls

Something I've never had the urge to do. Maybe it was growing up with cattle and a bull that weighed more than our car, but it turns out, those guys are huge. I've been sick the last 3 days, so the sketches are a bit more randomized depending on how loopy I'm feeling. Today we have people being trampled by bulls. Tadaa!

Sing a Song of Sixpence

There came a little blackbird,
And snapped off her nose.

I've had this running through my head for a while now. It's the image of the birds coming out of the pie that always stuck in my head. Much more so than the fact that a blackbird rips off a lady's nose a bit farther in the rhyme.

This made me go through some sketches over the rhyme. Again, the bird in pie theme won out in the end. You'll see a variation of the following sketch in the next painting.

So I'm a fairly messy painter. I paint on the floor or wall as I usually have more than a few paintings going at once, which makes easels a pain to deal with. To deal with this I keep something along the edge of the wall as a paint catcher. I replace this once a year or so and usually end up with someone buying the old one. A years worth of color ends up looking pretty damn cool I suppose. This year I thought I'd do something a little different.

I'll be giving away sections of my paint catcher this week over on the facebook page. All you have to do to be entered in the drawing is comment on the post. Next Wednesday (feb. 9th) I'll pick randomly from those who comment and mail your section signed, dated, and numbered.

Google Art Project

So today's fun comes in the form of the Google Art Project. It takes a decent number of some great museums and allows you to explore them and their art using google street view technology. It's really quite neat.

I think I have a crush on Joan of Arc

It started innocently enough with a random find of a Charles Goldie painting, and spiraled into a two hour image search complete with wikipedia readings. Followed that up with a read through Twain's Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc (not the most accurate biography, but he's a hell of a writer) and a quick study of the saints that visited her (Catherine is my favorite, and that Caravaggio painting of her is straight inspiration). Now I keep falling back on her for my sketches when nothing else comes to mind. She's already got a 6 foot painting underway, and I have at least 1 more smaller piece planned. She took an arrow through the neck!

Another work in progress for you today. I've been working on this one off and on a few weeks now. Portrait of Joan of Arc, 72X72" (4 36X36"panels). I added one of the 12X12" ones in the bottom corner for scale. It's a nice change of pace from the collection of smaller work I've been doing these last few years. Not to mention the research on Joan of Arc has been a lot of fun.

This has also spiraled me off on looking up and sketching saints. The one in the middle of the painting above is Saint Catherine, one of the 3 saints who appeared before Joan in her garden as a girl. She was my favorite of the 3. She died from beheading.

So I've been following this site for a while now watching some great prints come up. The problem is, I love original art. Prints are great, but for some reason, I personally don't like matted framed things outside of photographs. That being said, the piece that they posted from Esther Pearl Watson has made me rethink this idea.

For one, her colors are amazing. For two, I'm pretty sure I ate at that Denny's quite a bit growing up. So as I place an order for this print, I thought I'd share this link out for others to take a look at. Some great art up there, for ridiculously good prices. I thought I'd share some sketches with you today.

I draw a lot. Some of them go into paintings as drawn, and some give me image suggestions as to what to put in paintings, some I simply use the text from. Usually if someone is getting a portrait done, I'll do multiple drawings before hand, and a lot of what is in the painting comes out of those.

So, here's a few of the simple examples, the drawings where I simply redraw them onto a painting, usually making them a bit more detailed, or changing small things.

but another Missy drawing ends up changing the windows from bars, and gives the painting its text.

I personally love seeing how the art process comes together for people, so I'll continue to scan in some more drawings over the next few weeks to show where some of the stuff in my paintings come from. I'm also working away on 3 new 12X12" paintings, and 1 slightly larger one. I'll update on that soon as well.

I really don't get the people who are behind the complaints on artwork. Like always, the removal of the piece ( A Fire in My Belly) is giving it more press and acknowledgement than ignoring it would have. I suppose that's the one bright side of the whole stupid thing.

New year, and new website!

http://www.jeremyred.com/ is back up with a completely new design. I'll be using that as my primary area to show new work, and transition the blog into more inside work. I'll be posting more work in progress pictures, as well as preliminary sketches and how they compare to the finished work. I'll also be sharing random links and things I find interesting or inspiring.

New house/New studio

Just moved to a new place in Seattle. Larger house with an amazingly well lit room for painting. The world of making games is more or less fully absorbing all of my time for now, but should lighten up in the next week and a half or so. I plan on more updates again starting then. Until then, I'm mainly head under water, with not much painting going on. Not the happiest boy in the lot.

Been an odd week this time around. Great weather though, for a change. I spent a lot of time outdoors. Not a ton of painting got done due to this, but I do like where the new ones are going. Still exploring around on things a bit, but they are starting to come together. I'm thinking of moving to some larger works again once I hit my goal of 30 12X12".

It's been a good week. That far left painting may well be done. I need to stare at it a day or two more to be sure. The next two are coming along nicely as well. I have been sick this week and haven't been out much. It's basically been Jackie, myself, books, and cats/dogs to keep me company. Not surprising that the next two are about Jackie and me.

New ideas being tried out here. Trying to get past a feeling of confinement that I've been feeling on some of the latest paintings. We'll see where we land in the next few months.

The weekly paintings are working out really well. So far they are doing exactly what I had hoped, which is to get me working faster and getting past "humps" which I was letting myself get hung up before. Great exercise overall!
